Biodegradable Plastics or Bioplastics are bio-based polymers that are derived from renewable biomass sources. These can also be made using agricultural waste.

Agriculture waste that can be used to make biodegradable plastics or bioplastics should contain:

  • Material rich in starch – Common examples include corn, potatoes, rice etc.
  • Material rich in oil – Oil seeds, especially palm, soy, rapeseed, castor oil etc.
  • Material rich in cellulose – Sugarcane baggasse, corn husks etc.
